L’istituto, per specificare gli elementi di selezione, ha affermato: “Indipendentemente dal genere, in questi film, un legame romantico tra due o più personaggi, le cui azioni e/o intenzioni costituiscono il cuore della narrazione del film, è intriso di una ‘passione’ che ha arricchito il patrimonio cinematografico e culturale americano, continuando a ispirare artisti e pubblico contemporanei“.
